My child had been a student in the Brevard K-12 public school system, until graduating from high school in 2016. Since 2012, as a parent and a citizen, I have attempted to have meaningful involvement in the policies and procedures of the Brevard County Public School system. That experience has been a great disappointment!
Dissapointing? Absolutely! I am sure you have read or heard the oft used phrase..“we want the parent to be involved in their child’s education”. Sounds good..but only to a point. Parents, guardians and citizens of Brevard County have been relegated to fund raising, planting, paver installation or any of the other activities that equal non-meaningful and non-impactful participation.
The underlying fact is that the School District works purposefully and tirelessly to block anyone they can’t control,(parents, guardians, brevard citizens) from any impactful and meaningful input into the policies and the materials that bear upon the children of our school district. It goes without saying that volunteering is always a positive, but what is the real impact in what a child is taught and above all, learns ?
The founder of the Government system of Education, John Dewey, gave us a very telling insight into the mind and purpose of the Progressive/Liberal Education..
“Education is thus a most powerful ally of humanism and every American public school is a school of humanism. What can the Theistic Sunday schools, meeting for an hour, once a week and teaching only a fraction of the children, do to stem the tide of a five-day program of humanistic teaching?” John Dewey
